NAVY BOOKS

HMCS SWANSEA

We have an excellent selection of Naval books many of them with older publication dates and quite collectable and will be offering them for sale as time permits. The worlds navies live in the present but have histories in the past. Canada has a very small modern navy but once had the third largest in the world just after WW2. The USN is now the undisputed, most powerful navy in the world and in fact just one USN carrier has more sea billets on it than the entire Canadian Navy! Welcome to our Navy Books Page!!

Difficult to find 1944 Edition of VERY ORDINARY SEAMAN by J.P.W. Mallalieu

A novel about the lower deck on a destroyer based on real events. You can tell this book was published during the war years as the paper used was newsprint and starting at page 129 you can clearly see that a lower grade of newsprint was used. The pages are all there with weathering you might expect on newsprint over a 60 year period. The cover which is a waxy sort of linen is a bit loose with some wear damage but overall the book is still entirely readable and in good condition for its age. There is the one illustration shown in the image above. You can obtain a later reprint of this book so the main value here is that you have an original WW2 copy and you are reading the same book that people at the time would have read. This offers a certain collectable value that some will appreciate and others will not.  This is a classic treatment of the life of a lower decker on a Royal Navy destroyer. The language is toned down quite a bit from actual but indicative of what reality was. In a way I find it unfortunate that the actual language could not be used but I do understand why- there would be too much shock value to the reader of the day. An example ..."the flicking gun's jammed" I'm sure the sailor didn't say "flicking. Times were extremely tough in WW2 and you will much better understand the reality of the sea war in WW2 after reading this book. An excellent gift to anyone who served on a destroyer. I suggest it as a basic building block of any naval WW2 library.

YOUR NAVY 1946 edition

456 PAGES 5x8 PAGES VERY GOOD CONDITION, illustrated. A comprehensive history of the USN from old world navies to the revolutionary war, from the civil war to the end of ww2. The book is written for all enlisted men in the USN to give them an understanding of the history and development of the Navy and its role in the history of the USA. The style is colorful and dynamic to keep one's attention and the result is an interesting read that is exceptionally readable. Regular editions of this publication have been published and the interesting thing about the 1946 edition is that the war was only recently over the USN was huge and the most powerful navy in the world and comments about the enemy ( that would be "the Japs") are still fresh. I am sure they are not referred to as "the Japs" in recent histories.

HMCS EDMONTON commissioning book

This publication is a work of art. It is also a tribute to The Canadian Navy specifically those responsible for the construction and commissioning of the warship HMCS EDMONTON. The printing and publishing is the best available. Blue cover, gold imprint ( my scanner does not do it justice). The condition is excellent. 24 pages. 8 1/2X11" soft cover, dated 21 June 1997. It is noted that Canada has the worlds longest coastline.

The commissioning of a warship celebrates the day that the Navy takes over from her builders, the day her first crew takes command and the day the warship becomes an official Canadian Navy ship. HMCS EDMONTON is a MCDV class warship (Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel) and it is manned by members of the Canadian Naval Reserve. When I first saw a MCDV my initial thoughts were that it was a baby destroyer. In fact it looks similar to Canada's big General Purpose Frigates. Unlike the Gate Vessels she replaced HMCS EDMONTON packs a punch in the form of a 40 mm rapid fire Bofors gun and two 50 cal HMG's. With an efficient complement of 35 she represents an alternative to larger vessels requiring much larger crews. She is ideally configured for her main purpose -to protect Canada's coastlines.

Excellent color pictures, diagrams and specs.

The commissioning of a warship celebrates the day that the Navy takes over from her builders, the day her first crew takes command and the day the warship becomes an official Canadian Navy ship. HMCS WINNIPEG is a Canadian Patrol Frigate class warship. It is noted that these ships are .."superbly constructed" and ...they are! If you have been lucky enough to sail on a Canadian Patrol  Frigate you will understand. These are big suckers at over 5000 tonnes replacing our older steamers at 2500 tons.  They are more maneuverable than any warship afloat. They are also very tough customers with rockets, torpedoes and guns that would quickly dispatch any enemy. Included are details on the commissioning crew, weapons systems, specs and general information. I can speak from personal experience in admitting that these vessels will get your adrenalin flowing when they make a hard turn or go from full ahead to full astern in a boat length. They are magnificent. A true collectable!
